Almost but not quite…a month

So I’ve been here for about 4 weeks. I haven’t learned the meaning of the universe yet, but I guess that’s something that comes gradually with college. I’m still hanging out with a bunch of film majors. I still eat right, do my homework, and all that good stuff. I’ve learned that leaving your door open while playing guitar gets you a lot of visitors, and that having to use public bathrooms all the time is…less than desirable.

My classes (English, calculus, German, photography and printmaking, and physics of light and color) are going all right mostly. Today I thought my Stagcard was stolen, and then reported this to The Department of Public Safety. Then they called me and told me to check my laundry. Stagcard = found (although I still need to use the replacement they gave me this afternoon until Monday at noon). Also, despite my fancy vocabulary and my witty nature, my English teacher thinks that I am an idiot who needs to have a chat with the dean. This is because I never realized that she was collecting our essays, seeing as she said it would be counted as “just a writing practice”. Last year that meant it didn’t count at all, but I guess somehow it doesn’t anymore. When I failed to produce it, she decided to put me on her “list”. Needless to say, this is completely ridiculous, and I’m certain I will find the course exceptionally easy. But I am looking forward to my discussion with the dean. Hopefully once I’ve convinced him of my willingness to learn, we can turn the discussion to something else. I really hope he either plays video games, is a runner, or is a fan of the bagpipes, because otherwise the conversation will turn bad for me, very quickly.

That’s it for now, I’ll post in the future if I have anything else interesting to say.

Have a great day now!

First Two Weeks

It’s been 2 weeks here at Fairfield since classes began. I have 6 classes, one of which is FYE (First Year Experience), which is pointless. I take photo/printmaking, which has been mostly reading so far, but on Monday we went to the beach and lay down on this cloth-type thing and let the sun print our images into it. We had to wash it in the ocean, and in some sort of chemical, and then in the ocean again. It looks pretty. Next there’s physics. I don’t have much to say about it yet, other than it is science-y. Next is German Film and Cinema. We’ve watched 3 films so far, “Das Cabinett des Doktor Caligari”, “Metropolis” and “Der Blaue Engel”. None of these are incredibly  interesting to me, and I haven’t learned too much German, but since “Der Blaue Engel” is in German with no subtitles, that’s about to change. [Quick change of subject-my RA just walked down the hall shouting “It’s 11:11 make a wish!” He’s a funny kid. Now it’s 11:12. There’s always tomorrow.] Next is English, which I must say, is the least challenging course ever. A few weeks ago, I would not have believed it if someone told me my ART class would be much more demanding than my ENGLISH class (which is still not much). It’s understandable when a foreigner says something like; “They is here” rather than “They are here”, but one has to wonder when an American says it that way…Anyway, finally there’s calculus. It’s a mixture of things I understand and things I do not, but as long as I look in the textbook for help I should do well (the teacher seems unenthusiastic, and has a deep droning voice. He also usually misinterprets student’s questions).  Today my FYE teacher/leader told us that colleges usually don’t care too much about our freshmen/sophomore grades as they do about our junior/senior grades…way to motivate us.

Today I attended a TRACK CLUB meeting which has several enthusiastic members who want to gather more people. I have democratically elected myself the leader. I love totalitarianism (I mean democracy). So just from that meeting I met some more friends. I also started my radio show today, which is every Wednesday at 5pm. I just play music, and talk about it briefly.

Fairfield University Continued

It’s been 8 days here at FU (7 full days this far), and the coursework is already piling up. Actually I’m just kidding, I haven’t really had much homework. I was assigned an English paper, but this professor emailed my class telling us we didn’t actually have to do it. I also have had Calculus, and we were assigned 16 problems, which the professor told us are easy. They’re not too bad. For German, we had to watch a move from 1920, called “The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari” (which is silent, with English text).

Friday we had an activity fair, to sign up for clubs. I signed up for around 12 clubs, including German club, Asian studies, model UN, Anime club, Tennis club, TV, Radio, and the Mirror (newpaper). I might participate in 3-4 of these. I also spoke with a guy who may supposedly be in charge of a running group.

Other than that, I’ve been hanging around with people, playing frisbee, watching movies, eating large amounts of food, etc. On Saturday I went to Stamford.

Fairfield University

So here I am in college…lots of things going on. I’ve met some people, and we’ve done things together. Mostly eating, doing nothing, and today, watching episodes of Invader Zim (a cartoon that was on Nickelodeon 10 or so years ago that was deemed inappropriate for young children(lies)).  I went into the town of Fairfield a total of 3 times thus far. I met a few students from other countries, including (but not limited to), a guy from the Netherlands, two people from Zimbabwe, and a girl who was born in Poland. Yesterday I was in town and the Netherlands guy and I went to get something to drink (it’s been very hot here, like most of the northeast), but it was a wine selling place, and no one can purchase anything, even cups, unless they have an over-21 ID. I’ve had 2 classes so far, which are my clusters: Photography and Printmaking, and The Physics of Light and Color. The physics professor can be difficult to understand, seeing as he is Chinese and his English is less than perfect phonetically. The students for those 2 classes consist of the same 11 people. So what the 2 professors have decided to do is to combine the two courses so that we wouldn’t have to leave to go to a different class after the first is over. For example, on most Mondays, I will have 2.5 hours of Photo and Print, and then 2.5 hours of physics of physics. I hope it won’t be too painful…the physics professor, Mr. Xu, said participation is the key, so maybe if I really understand it I won’t be too bored. We weren’t given any physics homework, so none until next week. But I we ARE required to write a review/critique of a photograph that will be on display for the next week and a half. Doesn’t seem too hard; simply say what I think the meaning behind it is. I’m going to wait until Hurricane Earl gets here so I can think more clearly, and get to running. There’s an activity fair tomorrow, so that’ll be very useful. I’m also considering getting a radio show. I don’t know what I would do exactly…but I have ideas. That’s all for now, turn back in sometime within the next week.
