Fancy Living

Well spring break has come and gone and now it’s back to work.

Last night was an event for current freshman who will be living in Bellarmine Hall next year, which is for the creative life residential college. Apparently, twice as many people applied there as were accepted, and the guy in charge of the building (who I am sure has some sort of name and position and such) told us to consider ourselves “extremely fortunate.”

After having explored the building a little bit, I can see why. It’s nice. The rooms are 4 person suites, each with a bathroom. I don’t know whom I’ll be living with, but I should know within a few weeks. I didn’t get  good look inside any of the rooms, but I did see the common areas, which are nice.

It’s only been in use by students since September, though the stairs already have the usual wear and tear associated with the presence of obnoxious hooligans.

There are three floors, and the vast majority of students live on the second and third floors, whereas the first contains the primary lounge (these are just names I’m inventing by the way), the room in which we were assembled, and the multi-faith worship area. This relatively small room consists of a group of chairs (like pews) facing another side of the room, which is slightly elevated (like an altar), and two identical stained glass windows depicting a waterfall. I wonder what a truly objectively constructed multi-faith room would look like, though I suppose “multi” could refer to just the big 3 (the western monotheisms). I mean, it’s not as if a devout Buddhist can worship is going to find a tree in there, but I guess that’s kind of pointless, because not only is this suburban America (thus having a few pretend Buddhists here and there, but no real ones), but there are also plenty of trees here in America.

What they should really have instead are a bunch of pool tables. You can play pool with anyone, even if that person has nothing in common with you. I bet most wars could have been avoided if the leaders of the warring countries could have played pool together. They probably would have understood that sometimes, you accidentally hit the 8 ball in, and it’s all over. I don’t think that analogy even makes sense.

There are also many creative-type things set up for us next year, which should be fun.

Saint Patrick’s Day

As most of y’all are already aware, it is really warm out! So nice weather = T-shirt and shorts weather!

Usually I wear a T-shirt and shorts anyway…but you know it’s warm out when other people do it too.

This is probably the hottest weather that Norway ever gets…just some perspective.

Lots of people on the quad enjoying the sunshine, as well as certain other practices for which the Irish are known…like catching leprechauns! Wait…

I am hard at work on things that probably aren’t really that important. But hey, why not.

My roommate is gone and has taken the fish, and plans on giving some of them away. If he gives away Camulus, this means war (but any of the others can be flushed for all I care…they cannot compare to the greatness that is Camulus).

I’ll be home in about 24 hours!!!

Si Señor

So today is Thursday (and that’s ALL it is…), and I am 3 classes, one paper, and one quiz away from spring break. I plan to utilize my break in order to get things done. Let’s see how that goes.

On Saturday I ran a 5K race on campus, and got 5th place, and got a nice plaque. Sadly, my time was absolutely abysmal. Next time, it won’t be.

I did my radioshow at 5:15-6 yesterday, although I don’t even know if anyone heard it…I do know there were people in the studio before me, and I was not notified about any malfunction due to the Power Outage we had on Saturday night (at least as it related specifically to the radio station).

So anyway: power outage. There’s an article in this week’s Mirror titled: Fairfield U experiences mass blackout, entire campus remembers

Fortunately for me, I was not here. But I’ll get to that. Apparently everyone except those in townhouses (some of the Junior and Seniors) were forced to leave their dorms and go to the campus center. According to both the article, and the stories from the people who were here at that time, it was not fun. However, I also heard that it was an excellent bonding experience. So I suppose it depends who you are. After all, as Alexander Pope’s Essay on Man (which I recently read) claims: “One truth is clear, whatever is, is right.”

Also in this weeks Mirror, was an article about the University’s presidential election. Junior Charlie Knights won, and on the cover of the Mirror is a large picture of him celebrating, with the title: Charlie Knights #Winning. For those of you who have allowed the insufferable magnitude of nonsense that is popular culture to invade your brains, then you must be aware of Charlie Sheen and the media’s fascination with him.  So Charlie Sheen = Charlie Knights, won (the election), and the “#” is supposed to mimic a Twitter post. I’m not gonna lie, it amused me. (How much cocaine did Charlie Sheen do? Enough to kill two and a half men.) Ok enough of that.

I haven’t gotten to the best part of the Mirror yet. There happens to be an article written by some freshman in the opinion section. I heard it’s good.

Anyhow, the reason I was not present on Saturday is because I had gone to New York New York to visit my friend and his friend who was visiting from Colorado. I stayed in my friend’s apartment in Harlem. There were 2 major things that surprised me: a lot of nice cars, and no jazz musicians. Life confuses me.

So yeah, I explored New York, had some Cuban food/sushi, saw a Spanish film (called “Biutiful”, and I think it failed to make the audience sympathize with the characters), and bought clothes (which is to say, my friend picked out clothes for me, and I would say either “yes” or “no” to each choice, until I ended up with an acceptable ensemble).

It was fun. But then I returned, went to classes, and resettled into the stress of homework assignments.

Tomorrow evening I’m going to my to see my friends’ band play (on Tremont Street in Melrose), and relax, and stuff.

[Edit: I showed up to the Y on Tremont Street only to realize that it was at the Main Street Y, and by the time I got there it was over…]

Almost Spring Break…

Greetings devoted readers, new readers, people who can’t read, and everyone else.

I know I haven’t posted in a while, so I am just going to type about random events in the order in which I remember them.

A while ago there was a, ummm… meeting, for those of us who contribute to The Mirror. I met this Russian guy who doesn’t even go to Fairfield (I think he was visiting or something), and his college tuition will be paid for by his grandfather (who is apparently some sort of rich mafia boss with ties to Putin). He also has a fake Irish name that he uses. I also met a guy who speaks German, so we spoke to each other, and recited lyrics to a German rap song “Strassenjung”.
