To begin the year of the goat, 12 adventurers set off for a 180 kilometer bike ride in the East of Taiwan. Between the train rides and bike riding, the journey took us around the edge of nearly the whole island. We took the High Speed Rail from Taichung (“middle of Taiwan”) to Taipei (“North of Taiwan”) and then another train to Hualien (“Lotus Flower”) where we stayed overnight. To me the city looked basically indistinguishable from Taichung, though it is much closer to the ocean. It was here that the group convened and got our bikes and gear. On Saturday morning, we began the ride.

We shared the road with plenty of cars and scooters, and stopped a few times for food and water. With about 30K to go we went uphill, and then alongside rows of teaplants, down the road into a village, and finally down a long refreshing slope, and finally to the urban township of Yuli; the second place in which we would make an overnight stay…
